I have loved baking since I was a child growing up on a former Mennonite farm.
With a large family to feed, my parents did everything they could to ensure we all contributed to the family coffers. That included not only growing most of our own vegetables and picking our own fruits, but also cooking and baking everything from scratch.
All of my sisters and I (five in total) learned from a very young age how to cook soups, meat dishes, and casseroles starting with just the basics such as flour, potatoes, rice and raw vegetables from our gardens.
Baking from scratch was always so much fun - our mother was an expert who made a dozen loaves of bread every week. This was a woman who also made phyllo pastry from scratch! And "pasta days" included all of us - sisters and four brothers - pitching in to make yards and yards of pasta! Oh, the good ol' days!
